Brian Babin, DDS ’76, of Woodville has become the first Texas dentist elected to the U.S. Congress. He was sworn in Jan. 6, replacing Steve Stockman as representative for U.S. Congressional District 36, which includes Liberty, Orange, Hardin, Chambers, Newton, Jasper, Tyler and Polk counties and a portion of southeast Harris County. Wier accepted the award from the 2013 winner, Austin dentist Jerry P. Katz, DDS ’68, at the annual UTSD Alumni Round-Up Sept. 19 in the Denton A. Cooley, MD and Ralph C. The pink marble-clad Dental Branch building where thousands of dental careers were launched will soon be history, but alumni, employees and students can now own a small piece of it. The former home of The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston was acquired by UT M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and is slated for demolition, but a limited number of small keepsakes have been carved out of the marble exterior for the UTSD community. And by receiving a piece of the past, alumni and donors will help the school’s future by seeding the new UTSD Impact Fund. READ MORE

Participating restaurant chefs and celebrity chefs will present small samples of their favorite or newest creations.
