Celebrate 'Wear Red Day' on Friday

Thursday, January 31, 2013 - 12:00pm

UTHealth employees wearing red clothing form the shape of a heart to raise awareness of Go Red for Women Day.

Wear red on Friday to raise awareness of heart disease as the No. 1 killer of women in the U.S.

Make it your mission to fight heart disease in women on the 10th Annual National Wear Red Day on Friday, Feb. 1. On this National Wear Red Day, sport your red outfit, tell women you want them to live and help stop heart disease in our lifetime by sharing the message.

Heart disease is still the No. 1 killer of women in America. According to the American Heart Association, it causes 1 in 3 women’s deaths each year, killing approximately one woman every minute.

Since the first National Wear Red Day 10 years ago, tremendous strides have been made in the fight against heart disease in women, including:

-- 21 percent fewer women dying from heart disease
-- 23 percent more women aware that it's their No. 1 health threat
