UTSD Alumna Honored for Operation Smile Leadership

The founder of Operation Smile Jordan is Amal Zureikat Sharaiha, DDS, a 1982 graduate of UTSD's postdoctoral periodontics program. She has won an international award.
A 1982 postgraduate periodontics graduate of The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston has been honored by the Independent Women’s Forum (IWF) for her trailblazing professional and philanthropic achievements, including founding Jordan’s branch of Operation Smile in 2003.
Amal Zureikat Sharaiha, DDS, received the “Women Who Make a Difference” award at the IWF’s annual gala late last year. Her story is available online through “Periospectives,” the magazine of the American Academy of Periodontology. Sharaiha has been a diplomate of the Academy since 1988.
She was also the first woman periodontist to practice in Jordan and currently chairs the Jordanian Periodontal Society. She earned her dental degree from the Cairo University’s Dental School before coming to UTSD for postgraduate education.
Operation Smile is a private, nonprofit volunteer medical service organization providing reconstructive surgery and related health-care services to indigent children and young adults across the world. Operation Smile has treated more than 3,000 children from Jordan, the Palestinian territory and Iraq.
