Star of the South Table Clinic Awards: A Good Day for UTSD

Students from The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston won most of the table clinic presentation awards at the 2013 Star of the South Dental Meeting, including the Edward J. Cooksey Award, the competition’s top honor.

The annual gathering, sponsored by the Greater Houston Dental Society, was held March 7-9 at the George R. Brown Convention Center. The Cooksey award – given for overall excellence in scientific table clinic presentation – went to Shweta Tawde, BDS, for her presentation “Digital Complete Dentures.” Tawde is a resident in the Department of Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics.  Other winners include the following:

In the Specialist Category, Azadeh Afshari, DDS, a former general dentistry resident at UTSD, won first place for “Myofascial Pain Disorder Treatment and Effect on Hyoid Bone Position: A Retrospective Study.”

Taking third place in that category was Nisa Dadjoo, DDS, a resident in the Department of Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics. Her project was “Oral Rehabilitation of an Edentulous Patient Using a Combination of Zirconia and Pressed Ceramics in Implant-Supported Hybrid Prosthesis.”

In the General Dentist Category, Michelle Aguilos, DDS, a general practice resident at UTSD, won first place for her presentation “How to Optimize the Esthetics of Anterior Implants: A Literature Review.”

Tawde’s presentation won second place in that category, and Amy Downs, DMD, a general practice resident, won third place for her presentation “Continue or Discontinue?”

First Place: Hunter Owen, “Pilot Study on Methodology for Measuring Symmetry from CBCT Volumetric Data”

Second Place:  Aaron Menchaca, “Managing Rampant Caries by Minimally Invasive Dentistry”

Third Place:  Rohit Ummer, “Association of TP63 and DVL2 Genes with Nonsyndromic Cleft Lip/Palate

First Place:  Ashley Vaughters, Danielle Machak and Elizabeth Majchrowicz for “Pet Bacteria”

Second Place:  Holly Carraway, Jennifer Lindesmith and Farnaz Safavi for “Ozone Therapy and Its Effect on Oral Microflora”

Third Place:  Cornelia Gagos, Fouzia Mohammad, Peter Phan and Terri Ramsey for “Alzheimer’s Disease and Its Effect on Oral Health”
