UTPD Installs Additional Emergency Phones on Campus

Thursday, May 30, 2013 - 10:45am

Emergency phones like this one are located throughout the UT campus.

Additional emergency phones like this one have been installed in UT Research Park near the School of Dentistry.

Three new blue emergency phones have been installed in The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) Research Park, which includes the School of Dentistry.

The tall blue stanchions call directly to the 24-hour dispatch center of the UT Police Department, which provides security for UTHealth and the UT M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.

When the dispatcher answers, callers should provide a full name, location and the nature of the emergency, said UTPD Security Risk Mitigation Manager Laura Oswalt.

Many of the stanchions are near cameras, so if possible callers should stay in camera view and not leave the area since police will be dispatched to that location, Oswalt added.

The new emergency phones are located at the intersection of East Road and Bertner, at the south entrance to the Smith Research Building garage, and at the south entrance to the parking lot across the street from the UTHealth Recreation Center.

These are in addition to the four emergency phones already in the area: one at the parking lot on East Road across from the SOD, two by M.D. Anderson’s South Campus research buildings and one on the northwest corner of M.D. Anderson’s Proton Therapy Center on Old Spanish Trail.

Pressing the large button initiates a call to a UTPD dispatcher.

Pressing the large button next to "Emergency" initiates a call to UTPD.

Overall, more than 100 emergency phones are scattered throughout the UTHealth and M.D. Anderson properties, according to Oswalt.
