The Academy of General Dentistry has awarded its 2013 Humanitarian Award to Richmond, Va. resident Terry Dickinson, DDS — a 1967 graduate of The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston. The award was presented during the AGD’s 2013 Annual Meeting & Exhibits in June.

The AGD Humanitarian Award is presented to an individual who contributes voluntary service and consistent commitment, enhancing the image of general dentistry through delivery of quality dental care and civic leadership. Only 15 of the AGD’s 38,000 members have received this honor since the award’s inception in 1982.

“We are so proud to honor Dr. Dickinson,” said AGD President Linda J. Edgar, DDS. “He is an outstanding individual, and one who exemplifies the AGD’s dedication to helping those in need. His passion for bringing quality oral health care to underserved populations is an inspiration, and his tireless dedication has resulted in an amazing achievement.”

In 1999, when Dickinson became executive director of the Virginia Dental Association, he noticed an increasing need for dental care among Virginia’s underserved populations. He went on to found the VDA Foundation’s Mission of Mercy dental project, which hosts dental clinics throughout the state and provides free oral care to those in need. The project has provided millions of dollars in dental services to more than 48,000 patients during its 13-year tenure, and it has been replicated by dental organizations in 20 other states. Across the nation, 100,000 patients have received more than $50 million in donated dental services through similar MOM projects.

Dickinson currently serves on the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry Board of Advisors and the Virginia Oral Health Coalition Board of Directors. He also is a member of the American Dental Association, which presented him with its Humanitarian Award in 2010. He is a member of American Society of Association Executives and the American College of Dentists.

An AGD member for more than 37 years, Dickinson earned his AGD Fellowship Award in 1990 by completing 500 hours of continuing dental education, passing a comprehensive exam, and fulfilling three years of continuous membership in the AGD.

He attended The University of Texas at Austin as an undergraduate before enrolling at UT School of Dentistry. After graduation, he served two years as a U.S. Air Force dental officer before settling into private practice for 30 years in Houston.
