Nikola Angelov, DDS, MS, PhD, professor and chair of the Department of Periodontics and Dental Hygiene at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Dentistry, has been appointed holder of the Raul G. Caffesse, DDS, MS, DrOdont Distinguished Professorship in Periodontics. UTHealth President Giuseppe Colasurdo, MD, announced the appointment, which was effective June 1.
Angelov is a native of Macedonia and earned his DDS and master’s degree in periodontology, followed by a PhD in oral pathology and periodontology, from Saints Cyril and Methodius University, where he was also a clinical dentist and faculty member.
He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in oral infection and immunity with the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, a division of the National Institutes of Health, before joining the faculty of Loma Linda University School of Dentistry in 2004.
He left there earlier this year, having risen to full professor and director of the predoctoral periodontal program, to accept his current position at UTHealth. He had already been serving as an adjunct scientist with the school’s Houston Center for Biomaterials and Biomimetics since 2011.
Although Angelov’s professional career has been centered in academia, he has also maintained a part-time private practice. His wife, also a dentist, has a successful general practice in California. His family will join him in Houston next year.
