Clinical Assistant Professor Yasmine Haddad, DDS, PhD, and two first-year dental hygiene students from The University of Texas School of Dentistry volunteered for a Thanksgiving Day health fair at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston.
Jennifer Tran and Denise Murray gave up some of their holiday time to join Haddad in helping all who showed up for the annual Thanksgiving event. Dr. Jeffery Chang of the TZU CHI Foundation invited UTSD students and faculty to participate.
“Both students did an outstanding job providing the general public with appropriate oral hygiene instructions,” Haddad said. “I, along with five other dentists working with the foundation, performed dental and oral cancer screenings, and providing the screened individuals with referral information as appropriate.”
Medical and vision services also were offered during the health fair. Haddad brought her 12-year-old daughter, Tatiana, along to see community service first-hand.
“She really enjoyed serving the homeless population on Thanksgiving, and she was sincerely grateful at the end of the day for every single thing she has in her life,” Haddad said.
