The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Dentistry and Texas Children’s Health Plan have joined forces to add dental care to services offered at The Center for Children and Women in the Greenspoint area of Houston.

Occupying 3,000 square feet inside the 50,000-square-foot facility at 700 N. Sam Houston Parkway West, “UTHealth Dentistry Greenspoint” is now open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, with plans to expand to some evenings and Saturdays.

Unlike other services at The Center for Children and Women, the dental clinic will accept patients of all ages, male or female, including those with private insurance or paying cash.  Call 832-828-1446 for dental appointments.

UTHealth and Texas Children’s Health Plan are also planning to open a second multidisciplinary clinic at Westwood Mall in southwest Houston later this year.  Both ventures will strengthen the School of Dentistry’s pediatric dentistry program by expanding clinical opportunities for students and residents, said Dean John A. Valenza, DDS.

“We had already identified pediatrics as one of our targets for expanded community outreach, so when Texas Children’s Health Plan approached us in 2012 about this project, it was a perfect opportunity,” he said.

Texas Children’s Health Plan built offices and clinic space for the dental facility, and UTHealth provided all equipment, Valenza said.

UTHealth faculty dentists are already seeing patients at Greenspoint, and pediatric dentistry residents will join them in July. Senior dental students will begin seeing patients at the clinic in late August.

The Center for Children and Women opened in August 2013 to address the primary care medical and dental needs of the underserved populations, such as those dependent on Medicaid and CHIP (Children’s Health Insurance Program) who sometimes face a shortage of primary care providers.  The Center for Children and Women offers pediatricians, nurse practitioners, OB/GYN physicians, certified nurse midwives, behavioral health, optometry, imaging, a laboratory and an onsite pharmacy.

Adding dental care will benefit everyone involved, Valenza said.

“This and the future southwest Houston location will become flagship sites for UTHealth faculty, residents and students, not only to provide oral health care for children and pregnant women, but to do so in a multidisciplinary setting with physicians, nurses and other health-care providers,” he said.
