Students, residents and alumni of The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston won multiple awards in Scientific Table Clinics at the 2014 Star of the South Dental Convention March 27 at the George R. Brown Convention Center, including the Edward J. Cooksey Award and the Dentsply SCADA Award — the event’s top honors.
Dr. Mamatha Yadlapati won the Cooksey Award for “LPS-Induced Cytokine Production in Human Periodontal Ligament Cells.” Her sponsors were Drs. Renato Silva and Ariadne Letra. First-year dental student Glennis Katzmark, sponsored by Dr. Dharini van der Hoeven, won the SCADA Award, which is granted to the winners of U.S. dental school research competitions co-sponsored by the American Dental Association and Dentsply North America.

UTSD swept the Dental Students and General Dentists categories, winning first, second and third place in both. Dental student winners were Katzmark (first), Alex Burger (second), and Tam Tran (third). Their sponsors were Dr. Dharini van der Hoeven, Drs. Jacqueline Hecht and Shea Posey, and Dr. Ariadne Letra, respectively.
In the General Dentists Category, Drs. Alijah Bradley and Michelle Aguilos won first place; Drs. Nathalie Clouse Dunwody and Christopher Pedlar won second; and Drs. Mai Pham and Michelle Aguilos won third. All three projects were sponsored by Dr. Sudarat Kiat-amnuay.
Dr. Stephen Laman and Dr. Mai Tram Nguyen served as co-chairs for the table clinic. The convention is sponsored by the Greater Houston Dental Society.
