Krishna Kumar Kookal, MS

Krishna Kumar Kookal, MS, a software engineer with nine years of software and database development experience, has joined the staff of The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston as a full-time clinical informatics data warehouse analyst in the Department of Technology Services and Informatics (TSI).

He is available to help UTSD researchers, faculty, residents, students and others who need to extract or manipulate data from electronic health records (EHR) and related clinical information technology systems for research purposes, said Muhammad Walji, PhD, associate dean for technology services and informatics.

“If you have a research idea and are looking for data, get in touch with Krishna,” Walji said.

Kookal speaks three languages (English, Hindi and Malayalam) and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science and Engineering from Visvesvaraya Technological University in Bangalore, India. He worked for a leading information technology and business consulting company there before moving to the U.S. to pursue a master’s degree in health informatics from UTHealth School of Biomedical Informatics, graduating in 2011.

He was most recently employed as a senior software engineer at KnowMED Inc., where he was involved in developing data integration and analytics software.

During his master’s program, Kookal developed an interest in the potential of big data and analytics to improve health-care delivery and quality of care.

He has been involved since its inception in 2009 with “BigMouth,” the dental data depository hosted at UTHealth but containing data from five dental schools. “BigMouth” is already being used by researchers, faculty members and students from the contributing schools for their research, educational and administrative purposes.

In addition to analyzing data at the School of Dentistry, Kookal expects to be involved in developing and maintaining various business intelligence tools that will be used to explore and transform raw health-care data into more meaningful and useful information.

His office is in the Technology Services and Informatics suite (4178) on the fourth floor of the School of Dentistry. Reach him at or 713-486-4206.
