The deadline to contribute to the 2014 Faculty Campaign for Students at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) has been extended through May 31. The gifts are used to fund scholarships for students.

So far, 11 of the School of Dentistry’s 207 faculty members have given a total of $3,999 — a 5 percent participation rate. By comparison, other UTHealth schools’ contributions so far are as follows:

--Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences:  55 on faculty; 37 donors; gift total $4,765; 67 percent participation;

--Medical School:  1,300 on faculty; 98 donors; $30,783; 7.5 percent participation;
--School of Biomedical Informatics:   19 on faculty; 14 donors; $13,871; 74 percent participation;

--School of Nursing:  173 on faculty; 62 donors; $8,780; 36 percent participation;

--School of Public Health:  185 on faculty; 36 donors; $6,805; 19.5 percent participation.

UTHealth President Giuseppe Colasurdo, MD, has pledged to match aggregate donations to the 2014 Faculty Campaign for Students up to $100,000. The campaign video features School of Dentistry student Sami Kawas explaining the difference a scholarship made for him.

Faculty members at Houston’s health university hold a unique responsibility to go beyond simply educating students. Instead, they are challenged by the UTHealth mission to model the best practices in clinical care and public health. As an additional way to support UTHealth students, the 2014 Faculty Campaign for Students will raise funds to increase student scholarships.

The theme for this year’s campaign is “The Best Ideas Come from Within.” The strength of our programs is no more or less than an expression of the strength of our faculty and students, the two components without which there is no university. The ideas that we as faculty generate at UTHealth will be in the hands of our students one day.

The faculty campaign is an opportunity to make a direct and beneficial impact on the students’ lives, to
connect with them in a meaningful way at a critical time in their careers and to see a gift in action in a very personal and visible way.

The Faculty Campaign for Students ends in May, but all gifts and pledges made through the end of the fiscal year (Aug. 31, 2014) will count toward faculty giving.  For more information, please visit the Faculty Campaign for Students website.
