Sameer Jain, BDS, MS, an endodontics resident at The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston, has been selected as recipient of the 2015 Henry M. Thornton/SCADA Fellowship in the amount of $2,500 to help cover expenses incurred during his advanced program in endodontics at UTHealth. The award will be presented during the upcoming ADA Annual Session SCADA Awards Program Nov. 7 at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. It is the latest in a series of honors for UTSD’s Endodontics residents. At the American Association of Endodontists Annual Session in May, Marie Messing, DDS, received first place in Table Clinics, while Alexandra Garraton, DMD, won second place in the residents' Oral Presentations.
A new confocal microscope system at The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston is advancing biological imaging by allowing researchers to examine even thick-tissue specimens in a quick and cost-effective way. The Nikon C2+ confocal microscope arrived earlier this year and underwent a lengthy customization process that is now complete. The microscope resides in the Research Office laboratory on the fourth floor of the UT Behavioral and Biomedical Sciences Building, adjacent to the School of Dentistry. Researchers in the Department of Diagnostic and Biomedical Sciences are already putting the new equipment to good use.
Jeffrey Hoover, DMD, MS, has been named interim chair of the Department of Endodontics at The University of Texas School of Dentistry (UTSD) at Houston while a national search is underway for a permanent chair. Hoover began his new job July 1, succeeding Samuel Dorn, DDS, who will continue to direct the Advanced Education Program in Endodontics. Originally from Houston, Hoover is a graduate of Rice University and the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, where he earned a DMD in 1973. He served in the U.S. Naval Reserve Dental Corps from 1973 to 1975, earning a certificate and master’s degree in endodontics from UTSD in 1977.
University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston Dean John A. Valenza, DDS, welcomed new faculty members at a get-acquainted reception in their honor May 12 in The Denton A. Cooley, MD and Ralph C. Cooley, DDS University Life Center. It was a chance for them to meet each other as well as department chairs and key staff members, he said, noting that some of the new faculty have been at UTSD since summer 2014, while a few have been here less than a month.
