Margo Y. Melchor currently serves as Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Periodontics and Dental Hygiene and as Director of Community Outreach at The University of Texas School of Dentistry (UTSD) at Houston.
Her leadership opportunities began at UTSD as the faculty advisor of SADHA (Student American Dental Hygiene Association). She currently serves as the faculty advisor for the Hispanic Student Dental Association (HSDA), which is comprised of dental and dental hygiene students. Serving as the faculty advisor of the UT-Houston HSDA enabled her to become an active member with the national Hispanic Dental Association. Participation in various committees led to leadership roles which she proudly serves as the Immediate Past-President of HDA. Ms. Melchor is also a founding member of the Greater Houston Hispanic Dental Association (GHHDA) which was established in 2002 and served as the President of the GHHDA in 2007. Also, throughout her professional career, she has been an active member of dental hygiene and dental organizations and has served on numerous positions at the local and state level, including past president of the Greater Houston Dental Hygienists' Society in 1996-1997. Other organizational affiliations include: Texas Dental Hygiene Educator’s Association, American Dental Education Association, Texas Oral Health Summit, University of Texas Health Science Center-Houston Minority Faculty Association, Association for the Advancement of Mexican Americans, and the Galveston-Houston Catholic Archdiocese.
Ms. Melchor now serves as an Advisory Board member for the Sesame Street Workshop Educational Outreach oral health initiatives and will serve as an Advisory member of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association Diversity Committee. Ms. Melchor has presented at local and national meetings. Topics include: Dentinal Hypersensitivity, Cultural Awareness, and Diabetes associated with Periodontitis. She also presents biannually in the Pit and Fissure Sealant Certification course for UTSD's Office of Continuing Dental Education. She has also published in Modern Hygienist and wrote the guest editorial for the June 11, 2011 Dimensions of Dental Hygiene journal. Additionally, she was featured in a cover story for the American Association of Dental Assistants' publication.
