Dr. Long is an Adjunct Associate Professor in The Department of General Practice & Dental Public Health, and is a co-founder of The Professional Resource Center (PRC). Following his retirement from private practice, Long frequently lectures on ethics, professionalism, and practice management at UTSD, and offers career counseling services to students and recently graduated alumni through the PRC. Active in organized dentistry throughout his career, Dr. Long has served as President of the Greater Houston Dental Society, and on the Board of Directors of The Texas Dental Association, as well as the Board of Trustees of The American Dental Association. He was especially active in advocacy for the profession, chairing the Council on Legislative & Regulatory Affairs of The Texas Dental Association for 8 years, and the Council of Government Affairs for The American Dental Association for 2 years.
Additionally, he has been awarded Fellowships in The American College of Dentists, The International College of Dentists, and The Academy of General Dentistry. In 1998, Long was named "Texas Dentist of the Year" by the Texas Academy of General Dentistry, and recently received the "Gold Medal Award" of The Texas Dental Association for distinguished lifetime service to the profession. Dr. Long was on the active staff of Houston Methodist Hospital, serving as Deputy Chief of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery & Hospital Dentistry. He also acted as Chief of Dentistry for Diagnostic Center Hospital. Currently, he is a member of The University of Texas Health Science Center Development Board, and chairs the UTSD Advisory Committee for that organization.
