Dr. Shalizeh “Shelly” A. Patel is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics. She joined the faculty in 2008 after 7 years in private practice. Dr. Patel teaches pre-clinical and clinical dentistry to DDS candidates. She is the course director of Operative I, and teaches Clinical Restorative Dentistry to 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year dental students. In addition, she has designed both didactic, lab and clinic-based teaching curriculum in laser education at UTSD. She is also Principal Investigator or Collaborator in several research projects in the field of caries diagnosis/management, advances in teaching and learning, and laser dentistry. These efforts have led to scholarly publications and several presentations at the local, state and national levels. In 2012, she was recognized with the Dean's Teaching Excellence Award for Innovation in Teaching and is a member of Dean’s Academy of Distinguished Teaching Scholars. Currently, Dr. Patel is enrolled in the Educational Scholars Fellowship Program, a multi-institutional program aimed at improving the teaching skills of medical and dental educators.
In her spare time, she and her husband love to travel and enjoy fine dining. Their two little girls keep their lives busy but beautiful.
