Dr. Margo Y. Melchor, RDH, is an professor in the Department of Periodontics and Dental Hygiene and also serves as director of community outreach at UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry.
Her leadership opportunities began at the School of Dentistry when she was faculty advisor of SADHA (Student American Dental Hygiene Association). She currently serves as faculty advisor for the Hispanic Student Dental Association (HSDA), which is comprised of both dental and dental hygiene students. She is a member and past national president of the Hispanic Dental Association and a founding member and past president of the Greater Houston Hispanic Dental Association (GHHDA), which was established in 2002.
Throughout her professional career, Dr. Melchor has been an active member of dental hygiene and dental organizations and has held numerous positions at the local and state levels, including president of the Greater Houston Dental Hygienists' Society in 1996-97. She is affiliated with the Texas Dental Hygiene Educators' Association, American Dental Education Association, Texas Oral Health Summit, University of Texas Health Science Center-Houston Minority Faculty Association, Association for the Advancement of Mexican-Americans, the Galveston-Houston Catholic Archdiocese and the American Dental Hygienists' Association Diversity Committee. Dr. Melchor is on the advisory board for Sesame Street Workshop Educational Outreach's oral health initiatives, the San Jose Clinic, and Colgate-Palmolive Research and Development’s Partner’s Board. In November 2017, Governor Greg Abbott appointed Dr. Melchor to the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners, which regulates the practice of dentistry and dental hygiene in the state.
She has spoken at local and national meetings on topics such as "Dentinal Hypersensitivity," "Cultural Awareness," and "Diabetes Associated with Periodontitis," and would used to biannually present the "Pit-and-Fissure Sealant Certification."
Dr. Melchor's writing has been published in Modern Hygienist, and her work was featured in a guest editorial in the June 11, 2011 edition of Dimensions of Dental Hygiene. She was recently featured on the cover and inside the Dental Assistant Journal, a publication of the American Association of Dental Assistants.
