All students entering the University of Texas School of Dentistry are required to have a laptop that meets or exceeds the following specifications.
a. Laptop computer (PC or Mac) with at least a 13-inch screen with minimum of 1024 x 768 resolution
b. Minimum of 8GB RAM
c. Minimum of 120GB HDD space (larger would be better)
d. Minimum of 1.6GHz processor (Core i5 or better)
e. 256mb video card
f. Must run either Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 for PC Users or Mac OS Mavericks (10.9) or higher
g. Wi-Fi enabled
h. Microsoft Office 2010 or later (This can be purchased from the School Bookstore at educational pricing if needed)
i. Off campus internet access
j. An up-to-date virus scanner must be installed and active
k. Windows users should install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (Free Version)
In order to use your laptop at the School, the hard drive in your machine must be encrypted.
Mac users must turn on FileVault 2.
PC users must install Symantec Encryption software. Instructions for downloading and installing the software will be sent to students who are confirmed as attending UTSD.
All students will be required to sign a statement declaring that they will keep their computer hard drives encrypted for as long as they are students of the UT School of Dentistry.
Your laptop will be reviewed as part of Orientation and at periodic times during the program to ensure that it complies with these specifications.

Mac users will be required to activate the FileVault 2 encryption software on their machines. Please review the instructions for activating FileVault II on the Apple website and ensure that you have backed up you computer before proceeding with the encryption.
Instructions will be sent to students who are accepted to the UT School of Dentistry with instructions on how to download, install and configure the Symantec Encryption software.
