School of Dentistry recognizes 2023 faculty emerita appointments

UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry recognized several faculty emerita appointments.

The appointments are as follows:

Ron Johnson, DDS, dean emeritus

Johnson retired as professor with tenure after 27 years of dedicated service to the School of Dentistry and UTHealth Houston and was appointed as dean emeritus. He served as the School of Dentistry’s dean from 1996 to 2002 and has held numerous leadership positions, including the William N. Finnegan III Distinguished Teaching Professorship in Dental Sciences and as executive vice president for strategic affairs and chief academic diversity officer in the Office of Cultural and Institutional Diversity at UTHealth Houston. In 2014, he rejoined the dental school faculty as a professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry.

His retirement and dean emeritus appointment were recognized in a special celebration on Sept. 29.

Jeryl D. English, DDS, MS, chair emeritus

English was appointed chair and program director of the Department of Orthodontics at UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry on Sept. 1, 2001. He retired July 1, 2023, after 22 years of distinguished service and was appointed chair emeritus.

His retirement and chair emeritus appointment were recognized in a special celebration on April 18.

Dr. Jeryl English Retirement Celebration

James E. Bertz, DDS, MS, MD, professor emeritus

Bertz, who last served as a professor from 2009 to 2015, held prominent appointments across UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry, McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, and The University of Texas System spanning decades. In additional to serving as associate dean for admissions and students affairs and McGovern Medical School, he most notably served as assistant vice chancellor for health affairs at The University of Texas System.

His professor emeritus appointment was recognized during the resident commencement ceremony for the Bernard and Gloria Pepper Katz Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in June.

 James W. Wilson, DDS, professor emeritus

Wilson worked for the School of Dentistry in various capacities for 20 years. In the Katz Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, he progressed through the rank of assistant professor (2001-2005), associate professor (2005-2011), and professor (2011-2015), also serving as the department’s vice chair (2004-2015). Upon retirement in 2015, Wilson was rehired as a part-time, clinical professor, an appointment he maintained through Sept. 1, 2020.

His professor emeritus appointment was recognized during the OMS resident commencement ceremony in June.
