Five UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry students and their faculty mentor were recognized with the Golden Pen Division I Journalism Award by the International College of Dentists.

Dental students Hillary Bui, Sydney Pham, Andrew Roberts, Mason Tobola, and Jayme Witek, along with Professor Arthur Jeske, PhD, DMD, associate dean for strategic planning and continuing dental education, were recognized for their paper, titled “C. difficile: An Update for Dentistry.”

The award was presented during the annual ICD Journalism Awards at the American Association of Dental Editors and Journalists Annual Meeting in October in Orlando, Fla. The article was the cover story of the March 2022 issue of the Texas Dental Journal, a peer-reviewed publication.

  1. difficile infection, more commonly referred to as CDI, is a potential complication of antibiotic therapy.

The authors wrote, “Dentists should be aware that while some antibiotics appear to be more likely to be associated with clinically-significant C. difficile complications, virtually any antibiotic can create conditions favorable to the disease.”

The purpose of the article was to refamiliarize dentists with the basic microbiology of the C. difficile and its toxicity, as well as to review the diagnosis and management of the disease based on current scientific literature.

The Dental Journalism Awards, one of the ICD's longest ongoing projects in its 51st year, is open to any dental publication published in English. The awards are to recognize publications that have exhibited outstanding journalism in content, graphics, and improvement during the past year and encourage others to bring their own publication to a higher level.

The Golden Pen Award is presented for an article or series of articles in the previous publication year that is of current importance to the dental profession.

The Texas Dental Journal is the official publication for the more than 8,900 members of the Texas Dental Association. Established in 1883, the TDJ is the oldest continuously operating dental periodical in the Americas and the second oldest in the world. Published monthly, its circulation exceeds 9,000 and is the only statewide publication of its kind to reach the majority of Texas dentists.
