Oral and Maxillofacial Diagnostics: Quality Diagnostics for Patient Care

Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Diagnostics is a mail-in biopsy service laboratory for the dental and medical professions. Located in The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Dentistry, this diagnostic service is an active and indispensable source for teaching and scholarly activity for both students and faculty members. Our service has existed for more than half a century, providing important diagnostic services to local, national and international dental and medical health care providers. We process approximately 5,000 cases per year, and our laboratory remains one of the largest biopsy services for the dental profession. We also provide daily diagnostic consultations and second opinions on microscopic slides submitted from outside hospitals and pathology laboratories.

Our pathologists are all board-certified Diplomates of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Fellows of the American Academy of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology and hold faculty appointments at UT School of Dentistry. They have a wide expertise in the clinical, radiographic and histological interpretation of oral and maxillofacial diseases, and likewise have strong national and international reputations, especially in the fields of jawbone pathology, pediatric oral pathology, oral manifestations of HIV and HPV infections, oral cancer and its precursors, molecular markers and epidemiology of oral diseases. Our laboratory is also staffed by a team of specially trained and dedicated histotechnologists who ensure excellence in tissue processing, as well as a quick turnaround time (24-48 hours from receipt of the tissue, in most cases) for your biopsy report.

Our lab provides a broad range of laboratory diagnostic services, including routine or conventional histopathology, special stains, cytopathology (Pap smears), immunohistochemical and direct immunofluorescence testing for mucocutaneous autoimmune diseases. Additionally, the lab provides numerous unique, research-related technologies and procedures. All non-neoplastic bone samples, for example, are processed using research-grade decalcification techniques to reduce artifacts and allow the best evaluation of viability and degenerative changes.

We are dedicated to delivering prompt, expert interpretation and analysis for referring physicians and dentists who believe in prompt and accurate diagnoses for patient care. Being located within the largest medical center in the world, we have the benefit of consulting with pathologists who are experts in specific areas of pathology.
