What Parents Should Know

We are delighted that you are considering UTHealth School of Dentistry's Pediatric Dentistry Department for your child's dental needs, and we look forward to visiting with you. It is our goal to treat you and your children with experienced competence and gentle understanding. Our staff is dedicated to providing outstanding care and service in a comfortable, positive environment.

Along with the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Academy of Pediatrics, we recommend that a child's first dental visit be scheduled by his/her 1st birthday. No matter what age, our initial visit is a "get acquainted" visit. This means the treating doctor will give your child a complete oral exam, which includes a careful visual evaluation of the teeth and oral tissues, and X-rays if necessary for a complete diagnosis. We will also clean your child's teeth and apply topical fluoride.

We believe in friendly courtesy and will make every effort to keep your child's visit as pleasant and comfortable as possible. If, however, X-rays, cleaning or fluoride are not easily accepted, we can defer these to a later appointment, rather than create an unpleasant memory. Don't be alarmed if a young child should cry. Tears provide a healthy avenue of expression for a child when moving toward an unknown, so please don't be disturbed or embarrassed. Once a child becomes familiar with the new dental surroundings, the fear will subside.

For existing patients a re-visit time schedule will be established based on your child's needs, and you will be told when a recall visit is needed.
