What Parents Should Know

We are delighted that you are considering UTHealth School of Dentistry's Pediatric Dentistry Department to provide for your child's dental needs. We look forward to visiting with you. Our staff is dedicated to providing quality care and service in a comfortable, positive environment.

The initial appointment will be an assessment and "get acquainted" visit. A pediatric dentist faculty member, along with a predoctoral student, will give your child a complete oral exam, including careful visual evaluation of teeth and oral tissues to determine general treatment needs and suitability for treatment completion in our clinic. If your child's dental needs are deemed suitable for treatment in our clinic, then the student will complete X-rays as necessary for a complete diagnosis. We will also clean your child's teeth and apply topical fluoride. You should be prepared to pay approximately $100 for these first appointment services.

We will make every effort to make your child's visit as pleasant and comfortable as possible. If, however, X-rays, cleaning, or fluoride are not easily accepted, we can defer these to a later appointment rather than create an unpleasant memory. Don't be alarmed if a child should cry. Tears provide a healthy avenue of expression for a child when moving toward an unknown, so please don't be disturbed or embarrassed. Once a child becomes familiar with the new dental surroundings, the fear will subside.

After the initial appointment, when complete treatment needs have been established, your child will be assigned to a student for that care, and the student will contact you to set up future appointments.

For existing patients, a re-visit time schedule will be established based on your child's needs, and you will be told when a recall visit is needed.
