Biography

Dr. Srinivas Ayilavarapu was trained in periodontics and implant dentistry. He also background in oral biology with focus on inflammation. Dr. Ayilavarapu was an assistant professor at Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine before joining The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Dentistry in 2015.


Teaching

Dr. Ayilavarapu is tenured professor actively involved in clinical and didactic teaching for periodontics residents. Dr. Ayilavarapu is the course director for several advanced periodontics program courses, including graduate periodontics clinics, topical seminars in periodontics, perio/pros/endo seminars, and he is a course contributor on several other topics, such as current literature, an implant lecture series, and implant prosthodontics. Dr. Ayilavarapu also lectures and participates in several predoctoral periodontics courses. He was the 2018 recipient of the American Academy of Periodontology Educator Award.


Research

During his doctoral training at Boston University, Dr. Ayilavarapu studied the role of neutrophils in diabetes induced inflammation in periodontal disease. He is currently exploring how diabetes and obesity might affect alveolar bone markers. Dr. Ayilavarapu participates in research exploring risk assessment in periodontics and educational outcomes research. Dr. Ayilavarapu is the recipient for several research grants as a primary investigator, including Boston University Seed Grant, Advanced Research Grant from Osteology Foundation, and he serves as co-investigator on grants from American Academy of Periodontology Foundation Sunstar Grant and the UTSD Dean’s Small Grant program. Dr. Ayilavarapu serves as a reviewer of several peer-reviewed journals including Journal of Periodontology, Journal of Evidence Based Dental practice. In 2012, he was awarded The Nevins Teaching and Clinical Research Fellowship from the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation.

Dr Ayilavarapu is a board-certified periodontist and specializes in clinical periodontology and implant dentistry at UT Dentists with clinical interests in managing inflammation in periodontitis, regenerative periodontics and guided implant surgery.
