UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry hosted the inaugural Floss n’ Fenders car show on Saturday, April 12.

Alumni, employees, families, friends, and car enthusiasts throughout the community seized the opportunity to showcase their hot rods and raise money to support Give Vets a Smile. This special event brought members of the school and greater Houston area together to celebrate classic cars and raise funds to provide free dental care to veterans in need.

“There’s something magical about a vintage car show,” said Thomas Servos, DDS, chief clinical officer for UT Dentists, who entered to show his 1976 Porsche Carrera 3.0. “Whether you’re a die-hard car guy or just love the aesthetic of the cars, there’s always something for everyone. It brings generations together!”

Guests were treated with refreshments and branded items such as windshield shades and keychains to commemorate the inaugural event hosted in the School of Dentistry parking lot.

As the public observed the cars, they also voted for their favorite ones throughout the morning.

“It was really cool to participate in an event like Floss n’ Fenders,” said participant Maria Loza, DMD, MS, who entered her 2022 Winnebago Travato. “Collaborating for a cause like Give Vets a Smile was also a plus.”

Randy Rogers, first place winner, was awarded with a certificate and gift basket for his 1979 Chevrolet C10 pickup truck. Runner-up Roger Lewis was also awarded for his 1946 Ford Coupe Convertible.

Entry fees and donations from Floss n’ Fenders directly support Give Vets a Smile, the yearly philanthropy event offering free urgent, palliative, therapeutic, and/or preventive dental to U.S. military veterans.
