Andrew Roberts, DDS, of the Dental Class of 2024 at UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry has been recognized as the winner of the Dentsply Sirona Global Clinical Case Contest for the North America Region.

He was recognized for his photo-documented, anterior indirect esthetic restoration case. Magda S. Eldiwany, DDS, MS, clinical professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics, was his faculty mentor.

“These cases are judged on which looks the best,” said Roberts. “This patient has texted me how thankful they are for the restoration and was always happy when they came to see me.”

Eldiwany noted the experience of seeing joyful tears when a patient sees a before-and-after comparison, and this case was no exception.

“Our profession is a special one,” said Eldiwany. “It was a long road, but with Andrew’s perseverance, dedication, and encouragement to the patient, he was able to change his life.”

The national/region contests were held until mid-May. Roberts was presented his award on May 17 by Sarah Luehring of Dentsply Sirona.

The GCCC is a global initiative to support and promote talented dental students from all over the world best prepared for clinical practice. Dental undergraduate and graduate students, with less than two years of clinical practice, are invited to participate by documenting a patient case with photographs and text. Since its inception in 2004, more than 6,500 students have participated globally.

As the 2024 North America Region winner, Roberts will feature his restoration case to an international panel of judges in the field of restorative and esthetic dentistry at the Global Final on July 2 in Konstanz, Germany. Additionally, he will receive an awards package of Dentsply Sirona products.

“It’s an immense honor to travel to Europe to represent not only myself but also my school and the United States,” said Roberts. “This opportunity provides me with incredible exposure to interact with and learn from people around the world, allowing me to continue doing what I love — giving people their smiles and confidence.”

Eldiwany added her gratefulness to the dental profession and what it means to advance to present this case on a global stage.

“We are very excited to go to Germany to represent UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry and North America. It’s worth saying that we are the first to do this, and we are very proud,” she said.

Roberts, a 2020 graduate of the Rawls College of Business at Texas Tech University, recently walked the stage as a graduate of UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry on May 10. It was on that stage he addressed his classmates as the president of the DDS Class of 2024.

“I’m truly grateful for what I have already accomplished in my career and excited for what lies ahead,” said Roberts. “Dentistry has brought immense joy to both me and the patients I’ve met. I’m thankful for the incredible opportunities it has provided, including traveling across Central America for mission work and now Europe.”
