The sixth edition of Incisal Edge, a newsletter from the Student Research Group at UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry, became available Thursday, Sept. 4. With a theme of dental esthetics, this issue explores the science, art, and cultural significance of the smile.
Articles examine the evolution of dental esthetics from the Mona Lisa to modern cosmetic dentistry, advances in 3D printing and milling for restorations, the challenges of accurate shade matching, and orthodontic innovations aimed at more esthetic outcomes. The edition also highlights student-led research on retainer clarity and the color stability of temporary resins, emphasizing the intersection of dental science, patient experience, and visual appeal.
“Dental esthetics represents more than just appearance — it reflects the intersection of health, psychology, and culture,” the editors note in the introduction. “As technology and research advance, so too does our ability to redefine what it means to create a confident, natural-looking smile.”
Readers can explore Incisal Edge on the Student Research Group webpage.
The SRG is composed of dental students interested in scientific inquiry. The student group is a local chapter of the American Association of Dental Research’s National Student Research Group. It is guided by input from faculty advisor Chun-Teh Lee, DDS, PhD, student research coordinator.
SRG promotes, supports, and nurtures the interests of dental student researchers during their time at the School of Dentistry. It provides exposure to the diverse types of research in the dental profession and encourages involvement in research activities at the school by making students aware of research opportunities, such as the Summer Research Program and research electives. The group’s goals are accomplished in part by hosting monthly meetings where professors and students present their research.
