    The Doctor of Dental Surgery program offers a strong foundation of biomedical and behavorial sciences along side an outstanding clinical education. Students will participate in traditional classroom learning but also experience the structure of a dental practice as they learn on live and virtual patients.

    The Dental Hygiene Program provides exceptional clinical and academic opportunities for students interested in preventave oral health and the promotion of good health habits. We are the only Houston-area school offering a Bachelor of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene.

    Advanced Education

    The Advanced Education Program builds upon the knowledge base of a competent dentist and broadens their understanding of a specialized area of study. We offer three types of programs: graduate (degree and certificate), postgraduate (certificate), and residency (certificate).

    We offer numerous courses for dental professionals. Courses are available for all disciplines of dentistry, including general dentists, specialists, dental hygienists and dental assistants. Our world-renowned instructors, as well as guest lecturers and clinicians, offer cutting-edge, hands-on sessions.

Dentistry is an exciting profession with an abundance of opportunites. We strive to enroll the highest quality of students who will become exemplary health care professionals. The ability to think critically, demonstrate independance, and possess time management skills are crucial for success. We select one hundred predoctoral dental students and 40 undergraduate dental hygiene students each year. The school year will consist of two 18-week semesters and one eight-week summer session.

To support our students, the UTHealth School of Dentistry offers a state of the art facility which includes a clinical simluation and learning center, multipurpose labs, lecture rooms, television studio, faculty and administration offices, student lounge, clinical treatment areas and a library. We also offer the latest in technology in education and patient care. All of our offered programs are accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation and have been given the accredited status of approval.

Student Life

Nestled in the Texas Medical Center, the largest medical complex in the world, students can enjoy all aspects of our diverse city and campus. UTHealth offers several amenities our students can take advantage of and Houston's many events, festivals, theaters, museums, and sports teams are sure to keep you active.

Professional Resource Center

The Professional Resource Center (PRC) of The University of Texas School of Dentistry, established in July 2012, works to provide continuing professional support for all UTSD alumni and students in their pursuits of successful careers in dentistry. Student counseling and career planning resources are available for all dental, dental hygiene, and graduate students, as well as to all UTSD alumni, at no charge throughout their careers. The PRC is also a repository of information and/or an advisor on dental practice opportunities, including private practices for sale and associate employment positions. Additionally, information is available for students and alumni on career opportunities in education, research, the uniformed services, public health, and government. The Professional Resource Center is co-directed by Dr. Boyd Shepherd, dentist/attorney, who is available for employment contract analysis and career counseling, and by Dr. Jerry Long, distinguished alumnus and retired dentist (46 years in private practice), who is available for practice management and career counseling.

SUMMER MEDICAL AND DENTAL
EDUCATION PROGRAM

The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Dentistry and Medical School at Houston together comprise one of 12 sites of the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP), a national program of The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Approximately 80 college undergraduate students attend SMDEP at UTHealth each summer.

The program provides six weeks of intense exposure to clinical dentistry and medicine, while providing science and career counseling for students considering health care careers.

SMDEP Application Opens November 1st and early applications are strongly encouraged. The application deadline is March 1st.
