Students learning from professor

Dentistry is an exciting profession with an abundance of opportunities. We strive to enroll the highest quality students who will become exemplary health-care professionals. Critical thinking, independence and time-management skills are crucial for success. We select 100 predoctoral dental students and 40 undergraduate dental hygiene students each year. The school year consists of two 18-week semesters and one eight-week summer session.

To support our students, UTHealth School of Dentistry provides a state-of-the-art facility with a clinical simulation and learning center, multipurpose labs, lecture rooms, television studio, faculty and administration offices, student lounge, clinical treatment areas and a library. We also offer the latest in technology in education and patient care. All of our offered programs are accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation.

As they work, study and play in Houston, the fourth largest city in the U.S., students can enjoy all aspects of a diverse city and campus. UTHealth offers several amenities for students, and with Houston's year-round events, festivals, theaters, museums, and sports teams, fun is never far away.

Professional Resource Center

UTHealth School of Dentistry launched the Professional Resource Center in 2012. The PRC provides professional, business and ethical counseling for all UTSD students, residents and alumni at no charge for the first three years after graduation. The PRC's services remain available to all alumni thereafter though annual registration and donation opportunities.

The PRC is co-directed by Dr. Boyd Shepherd, dentist/attorney, who is available for employment contract analysis and career counseling, and by Dr. Jerry Long, distinguished alumnus and retired dentist (46 years in private practice), who is available for practice management and career counseling.

The PRC is also a repository of career information and dental practice opportunities, including private practices for sale, associate employment positions, and professional opportunities in education, research, the uniformed services, public health, and government.

UTHealth School of Dentistry and Medical School together comprise one of 12 sites of the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP), a national program funded by a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Each summer, approximately 80 college undergraduate students attend SMDEP at UTHealth.

The program provides six weeks of intense exposure to clinical dentistry and medicine, while providing science and career counseling for students considering health-care careers.

The SMDEP application period opens Nov. 1, and early applications are strongly encouraged. The application deadline is March 1.
