Dental student Askew inspires students through Explore Club

Kellie Askew, a second-year dental student at UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry, has begun his community project as part of the 2024-25 cohort for the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship Houston-Galveston.
Explore Club, Askew’s yearlong project, is giving students at YES Prep Public Schools an outlet to become informed on pursuing a career in health care through weekly workshops that gives details on certain fields.
“The original goal was to inspire 20 students to pursue a career in health-related careers, but specifically dentistry,” he said. “Right now, I’ve already surpassed that goal; we’re already at 32 kids having picked a career, and we’re only halfway through.”
The Albert Schweitzer Fellowship gives graduate and undergraduate students the opportunity to design and implement a yearlong, mentored, community project that addresses an unmet health need for an underserved population. Fellows are paired with mentors, field experts, and community sites to enhance the services of existing community organizations who serve vulnerable populations, with the goal of creating an immediate and lasting impact in the Houston-Galveston area.
