The next installment of UTHealth School of Dentistry at Houston’s live storytelling series, Behind the Smile: Stories in and out of Dentistry, is set for 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, via Cisco Webex. The theme is “gratitude.”
Everyone has a story to tell, and we want to hear yours. Individuals interested in sharing can summarize their story in a short paragraph (500 words max) and submit to PACE@uth.tmc.edu by Friday, Oct. 23, for consideration. Selected storytellers will be notified by Tuesday, Nov. 3.
Stories can be about anyone or anything that validates love, grace, pain, triumph, failure, vulnerability, and human resilience; it can all lead to a place of gratitude. Regardless of rank, position, background, religion, or race, we’ve all faced challenges that could divide or defeat us, but in the end, gratitude can unite us.
Distinguished Teaching Professor Shalizeh “Shelly” Patel, DDS, MEd, and Whitney Vrazel, DDS ’19, introduced Behind the Smile in 2018 as a way to help students, faculty, staff, residents, and alumni connect by sharing stories. UTSD was the first U.S. dental school to embrace storytelling as a tool for mental health awareness.
Because of COVID-19, this year’s event will be streamed live, with only the storytellers and technical staff present in person. Registration details will be announced soon.
