Dr. Oluwabunmi (Bunmi) Tokede is an associate professor with a joint appointment between the Department of Diagnostic and Biomedical Sciences and Department of Orthodontics. He was recruited to the Texas Center for Oral Healthcare Quality and Safety at UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry in August 2021.
Dr. Tokede’s research focuses on using informatics to improve quality of care and patient outcomes.
Originally from Lagos, Nigeria, Dr. Tokede received a bachelor of dental surgery degree from the University of Ibadan in 2006 and practiced general dentistry part-time for three years while conducting research with the World Health Organization.
In 2009, Dr. Tokede came to the U.S. to continue his education and research. He completed a master’s in public health from Harvard School of Public Health in 2010 and was a postdoctoral research fellow at Harvard School of Dental Medicine from 2010-13.
Dr. Tokede taught oral health policy and epidemiology at Harvard School of Medicine, serving as an instructor from 2014-16 and assistant professor from 2016-17. After completing orthodontics residency at Harvard School of Dental Medicine in 2020, he served as a clinical instructor at Harvard Dental Center until May 2021. He completed a doctorate in medical sciences with a focus in oral biology from Harvard Medical School in 2021 and became a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics in Sept. 2021.
Dr. Tokede is a member of the American Association of Orthodontics, American Dental Association, American Association for Dental Research, American Dental Education Association, American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Society for Nutrition. He serves as an ad hoc reviewer for the Journal of Dental Education, European Journal of Dental Education, Journal of Evidence-Based Dental Practice, Journal of Public Health Dentistry, and Journal of the California Dental Association.
Dr. Tokede has published over 30 peer-reviewed publications (including articles and abstracts) and contributed to one book chapter. He has also obtained independent funding from the National Institutes of Health.
Dr. Tokede has been recognized with the Harvard Presidential Scholarship (2017-21), Harvard University Merit Scholarship (2010), and University of Ibadan Best Graduating Student Award (2006).
