Dr. Makins is a graduate of the University of Texas Dental Branch in Houston and received his certificate in endodontics from the Baylor College of Dentistry in 1983. He established his endodontic practice in College Station, Texas where he was the only endodontist in a one hundred mile radius. After ten years, he attended the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio to study dental radiology, oral medicine and forensic dentistry in the Dental Diagnostic Science program. Upon completion of the program, he accepted a position at the Dental Branch in Houston teaching radiology. Later, he joined the endodontic faculty and spent the next fifteen years teaching and practicing endodontics. He returned to the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and completed the advanced education program in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology with the Master of Science degree in 2015. An invitation from the University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston took Dr. Makins back to Houston where he serves as Director of the predoctoral program in endodontics. Dr. Makins is a fellow of the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists. He has and continues to serve as a reviewer, editorial board member and scientific advisor for the Journal of Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, and Oral Radiology, the Texas Dental Journal and the Journal of Endodontics.   Additionally, he has been actively involved in the American Dental Education Association, the American Association of Endodontists, the Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, the Texas Dental Association, the Brazos Valley District Dental Society and the Houston Academy of Endodontists. Dr. Makins has several publications and has given numerous invited and continuing education presentations on a variety of topics related to endodontics and dental radiology, particularly cone beam imaging.
