Dr. Nikola Angelov is a professor and chair of the Department of Periodontics and Dental Hygiene at UTHealth School of Dentistry at Houston. He holds the Raul G. Caffesse, DDS, MS, DrOdont Distinguished Professorship in Periodontics.

Dr. Angelov earned his DDS, MS, PhD and Certificate of Specialty in Oral Pathology and Periodontology from Saints Cyril and Methodius University and taught in the Department of Oral Pathology and Periodontology in Macedonia from 1993-2001. In 2001, he received a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institutes of Health, National Institute for Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIH/NIDCR). In the NIDCR's Oral Infection and Immunity Branch, Dr. Angelov successfully developed a new model of oral mucosal wound healing and was also involved in collaborative clinical studies and clinical trial evaluations, as well as other studies.

In 2004, he wrote his doctoral dissertation on “Role of Secretory Leukocyte Inhibitor in the Healing of Oral Mucosal Wounds.” The same year, he joined the faculty of Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, Department of Periodontics, where he achieved full professorship and served as section chief and director of the Undergraduate Program in Periodontics.

Dr. Angelov also holds a Certificate of Specialty in Periodontics from LLUSD and has been a diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology since 2008. That same year, he received the American Academy of Periodontics' Educator of the Year Award for outstanding results in teaching in periodontics. In 2013, Dr. Angelov joined the faculty of UTHealth School of Dentistry in Houston as a professor and department chair. 

He has several other academic awards and is actively involved in teaching and research. His research areas include oral infection and immunity, mucosal wound healing, and periodontal microbiology, as well as dental implants. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and has been invited to speak to prominent professional and research meetings. He is a member of numerous professional societies in the U.S. and abroad, and serves on editorial and advisory boards of several professional journals.
