Biography

Dr. Pooja Maney was appointed as professor in the UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry Department of Periodontics and Dental Hygiene in the fall of 2022. As a diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, Dr. Maney is board-certified in periodontology and dental implant surgery. .


Teaching

Dr. Maney is actively involved in the clinical and didactic teaching of both predoctoral students and periodontics residents at the School of Dentistry. Dr. Maney previously taught periodontology at LSUHSC School of Dentistry in New Orleans from 2009 to 2018, where she also served as director of the Advanced Education Program in Periodontology from 2018 to 2022. Dr. Maney was the 2016 recipient of the American Academy of Periodontology Educator Award.


Research

Dr. Maney’s research interests include pathogenesis of periodontitis, genetic aspects of periodontal diseases, and dental implants. Throughout her doctoral studies at The Ohio State University, she delved into exploring the correlation between single nucleotide polymorphisms and the neutrophil response in young African American patients affected by aggressive periodontitis. Dr. Maney has played a pivotal role as an investigator in numerous studies, including those examining clinical aspects of dental implants. Furthermore, she has provided mentorship to numerous residents specializing in periodontics, guiding them in their master’s research projects. Dr. Maney has published several scientific peer reviewed articles, and her research has been presented at various national and international conferences. Dr. Maney also plays an active role as a reviewer for esteemed scientific publications such as the Journal of Periodontology.

Clinical Interests

Dr. Maney has a passion for her clinical work and profoundly cares for the well-being of her patients. She consistently goes above and beyond to ensure the highest quality of care and support for her patients. Her clinical interests include surgical and non-surgical therapy to treat periodontal disease, periodontal regenerative therapy (bone grafting), dental implant therapy, soft tissue grafting (gum recession treatment).

Dr. Maney is an active member of the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP), Southwest Society of Periodontists (SWSP), and American Dental Education Association (ADEA). She is an elected member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU) Dental Honor Society.
