Mrs. Jayne McWherter is Associate Professor Emerita of Dental Hygiene at the Department of Periodontics and Dental Hygiene at UTHealth School of Dentistry.
This highly selective institutional honor is awarded to faculty exhibiting the highest academic, research and service standards as well as a record of service to the university that stands out among their peers.
Mrs. Jayne McWherter started her professional affiliation with our school and university in 1981 as a Clinical Assistant Professor, rising through the academic ranks and serving our university through teaching, research and service activities until her retirement in 2015 as an Associate Professor and Program Director of Dental Hygiene.
During her outstanding professional career, Jayne demonstrated excellence in teaching, as evidenced by tremendous number of teaching awards like several Dean's Recognition for Teaching Excellence awards (1984, 1991), the Dean's Teaching Excellence Award (1994, 1995, 2000, 2002), the Dean's Teaching Excellence List (1998, 1999, 2003, 2004); and the coveted, student-chosen awards like the John P. McGovern Award for clinical teaching in 2001, as well as the Lorna J. Bruning Award for Clinical Teaching Excellence in 2006, among others.
During her productive scholarly career, Jayne has served as a conference, symposia and workshop organizer, panelist or discussant at professional meetings, has presentations at other universities and at professional meetings, conferences and workshops, including table clinic presentations, continuing education courses and has published abstracts and scholarly articles in peer-reviewed professional journal.
Mrs. McWherter’s service contributions to the university, the school, the department, and the profession are stellar. She has served in numerous committees as chair, co-chair and member; and she has been involved in plethora of service activities within organized dentistry and dental hygiene. Mrs. McWherter has served as a Program Director from 2008 until her retirement in 2015 and was instrumental in modernizing the dental hygiene program in our institution while elevating the program to the highest level of a professional dental hygiene program.
