Dr. Gary Frey, professor and chair of the Department of General Practice and Dental Public Health, holds the Ralph A. Frankson, DDS, Professorship in General Dentistry.
Dr. Frey is a 1979 graduate of UTHealth School of Dentistry at Houston. He earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Baylor University in Waco and joined the UTSD faculty in 2000 after 12 years in private practice and 10 years as owner of Classic Dental Ceramics Lab.
He is a member of Psi Omega Dental Fraternity, the International Association for Dental Research, the Society of American Indian Dentists, the American Dental Education Association, and Xi Psi Phi Dental Fraternity. He is a past president of Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Fraternity. His professional memberships also include the American and Texas Dental Associations, the Greater Houston Dental Society, the UTSD Alumni Association and the Baylor Alumni Association.
At UTSD, Dr. Frey has won multiple Dean’s Teaching Excellence Awards, the John P. McGovern Outstanding Teaching Award and the John H. Freeman Award for Faculty Teaching. He is faculty sponsor for the American Student Dental Association and Psi Omega Dental Fraternity.
In addition to his duties as chair, Dr. Frey is assigned as faculty, course contributor or course director for multiple courses, teaching both dental and dental hygiene students. His research interests include biomaterials, especially durability and esthetic qualities of dental prosthetics and bonding materials.
