Kalu U. E. Ogbureke is a professor of oral and maxillofacial, head and neck pathology, internationally recognized for his leadership in academic dentistry, translational cancer research, and the intersection of health care, law, and policy. He previously served as Chair of the Department of Diagnostic and Biomedical Sciences at UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry from 2012 to 2019 and has held multiple visiting professorships in the United States and abroad. As a Carnegie African Diaspora Fellow at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, he led curriculum development for a new Faculty of Dentistry, reflecting his long-standing commitment to global academic capacity building.

Ogbureke earned his dental degree from the University of Ibadan, a master’s degree in medical science from the University of Glasgow, a Doctor of Medical Sciences in molecular and oral biology from Harvard University, and a Juris Doctor from Suffolk University Law School. He also completed advanced training through the National Institutes of Health (Research Fellow), Johns Hopkins University (cert. Business of Medicine), McGill University (Forensic Dentistry), and leading professional colleges in the United Kingdom. His credentials include board certification in oral and maxillofacial pathology (ABOMP), medical malpractice (ABMM), and legal medicine (ABLM). Ogbureke has been inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Dentists (FACD).

A principal investigator and widely cited scholar, Ogbureke has led funded research on the role of the SIBLING family of proteins in oral cancer and precancer, with support from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research and private foundations. His work has helped shape understanding of oral and head and neck cancer biology and established him as a recognized authority in the field. His clinical expertise includes diagnostic oral and maxillofacial histopathology, head and neck pathology, and clinical oral medicine.

His honors include Fulbright awards, the ADEA Harry W. Bruce Jr. Legislative Fellowship, the King James IV Professorship from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (the first of African Descent to win this award), and recognition from the United States House of Representatives. Admitted to practice law in multiple U.S. jurisdictions, Ogbureke is also a frequent invited speaker on health law, forensic dentistry, and the legal and ethical dimensions of medical and dental practice. His career reflects a rare combination of scientific depth, clinical excellence, legal expertise, and public service.

Beyond his academic and clinical work, Ogbureke has contributed to accreditation, professional governance, forensic investigation, and international scholarly exchange. He has served as a consultant and site visitor for dental accreditation, held leadership roles in major research and legal medicine organizations, and participated in high-profile forensic identification efforts. He has authored and co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters and is co-author and editor of the book Oral Cancer.

In June 2002, Ogbureke was invited as a Discussant on the subject of “NOMA in Nigeria” by the National Public Radio/ BBC, “The World Today” program (AUDIO available) hosted by Lisa Mullin. In 2010, he was profiled by the Augusta Chronicle in a full-length article titled: “Professor Stays Too Busy to Count his Degrees," and quoted in an Augusta Chronicle article discussing research report on “Coffee and tea intake and risk of head and neck cancer: pooled analysis in the international head and neck cancer epidemiology consortium.” The article by Galeone et al. (2010) discussed the effects of coffee consumption on the risk of developing head and neck cancers, including oral cancers. The same year (2010) Ogbureke’s research was highlighted in the Augusta Chronicles in a full-length article titled: “GHSU wants to increase research, federal funding."

Ogbureke has authored and co-authored over 90 peer reviewed scientific articles and abstracts in high impact journals and book chapters, and is the Editor of, and a contributing author to, the book titled Oral Cancer.
