16th Annual Student Research Showcase set for Oct. 27

The annual event features research conducted by predoctoral and postdoctoral students over the summer under the mentorship of School of Dentistry faculty.

The Office of Research at UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry is excited to present the 16th Annual Student Research Showcase on Tuesday, Oct. 27, in the Cooley University Life Center.

The annual event features research conducted by predoctoral and postdoctoral students over the summer under the mentorship of School of Dentistry faculty. The showcase provides students an opportunity to present their findings, engage with researchers and clinicians, and share their work with the broader dental school community.

The William T. Butler Distinguished Lecture will be presented by Yvonne L. Hernandez-Kapila, DDS, PhD, associate dean of research at the UCLA School of Dentistry, professor of dentistry in the Sections of Biosystems and Function and Periodontics, and holder of the Felix and Mildred Yip Endowed Chair.

A clinician-scientist and academic leader, Hernandez-Kapila brings more than 30 years of experience in research, education, patient care, and administration. She earned her DDS, periodontology residency, PhD in oral biology, and postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco. Throughout her career, she has held faculty and leadership positions at UCSF, the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, and the UCLA School of Dentistry.

Hernandez-Kapila’s research has focused on the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying periodontal disease and oral cancer. Her work has resulted in significant discoveries related to oral-systemic health connections, microbiome research, and the development of novel therapeutic approaches. She has maintained continuous National Institutes of Health funding for more than three decares and has mentored more than 100 students, trainees, and junior faculty members.

In addition to leading an active research program, Hernandez-Kapila has served on numerous national committees and review panels, including service with the NIH, the National Cancer Institute, and the American Academy of Periodontology. Her commitment to mentorship and research training has helped prepare the next generation of scientists and academic leaders in oral health.
