UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry Dean John A. Valenza, DDS ’81, plans to retire on Aug. 31, 2026.

Dear School of Dentistry Family,

It is truly with tremendous gratitude and mixed emotions that I write to you today.

After much reflection, I have decided to retire on Aug. 31, 2026 — after 42 years in dental education, including 38 at this great school and my alma mater, and the past 16-plus as dean.

From The University of Texas Dental Branch and the “Pink Palace” building to UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry and 7500 Cambridge St., this has always been my professional home — as a member of the Dental Class of 1981, a faculty member, and yes, even as a patient — and it always will be.

As I contemplated this change, I realized there’s never a perfectly quiet moment to step aside. There will always be a next project, recruitment, accreditation site visit, or other initiative to improve oral health and improve overall health. And as someone who knew when I was a dental student that I wanted to be a full-time educator, this is one of the most difficult professional decisions I’ve ever made. But I feel in my heart, and with good health, that the time has come for the next chapter in life.

Until then, I’ll continue to give my all every day, and will work to ensure a smooth transition for the next dean. Afterward, I hope to remain involved in a limited volunteer role, such as teaching, assisting with accreditation, or supporting the school wherever I can contribute.

The School of Dentistry is strong because of you — our faculty and staff who support students and patients every day; our students and residents who keep us learning; our researchers who push boundaries and make new discoveries; and our alumni and partners who extend our impact far beyond our clinics and classrooms. Any success we’ve had has been shared because, as we always say, “We Are UTSD!”

I’m also profoundly grateful for the steady support of UTHealth Houston leadership and for the privilege of working alongside so many exceptional and passionate individuals. I know they will be committed to being there for the School of Dentistry during this transition.

In closing, I’m excited for what we’ll accomplish together in the months ahead — and for what comes next for my wife, Debbie, our family, and me. I wish I could share this news with each of you in person, but as always, please reach out with questions, ideas, or concerns.

With heartfelt appreciation, and remember, “The Best is Yet to Come!”
