The American Student Dental Association chapter at UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry recently hosted its annual Loupes Fair, giving dental and dental hygiene students the opportunity to explore the essential tools for their clinical training.
With 10 vendors on hand, students could explore and compare a variety of loupes firsthand. Over 250 students attended the fair, creating a collaborative space to explore loupes and discuss ergonomics in clinical practice.
“ASDA has hosted the Loupes Fair for over 10 years now,” said Kamile Kuklertye, a second-year dental student and events chair-elect. “Loupes are an integral tool for every dentist, and we love being able to help students be equipped for the best visual access and care for their patients.”
Ergonomic loupes are increasingly recognized as an essential tool for dental professionals, enhancing patient care and supporting career longevity. By promoting a more upright posture, they help reduce strain on the neck, shoulders, and back — issues that often lead to fatigue and long-term musculoskeletal problems. Beyond comfort, ergonomic designs reduce eye fatigue and allow clinicians to work with greater precision.
Students were able to compare different brands and styles in one location, an experience the organizers say is invaluable for making informed decisions.
“Students really appreciated the chance to try on loupes from all the different vendors at once,” Kuklertye said. “Getting loupes is an exciting milestone in the transition from a heavier didactic and lecture-based curriculum to more hands-on laboratory classes and time in clinic.”
Michael Landavazo, a third-year dental student and events chair, emphasized the fair’s role in promoting long-term health for future dentists.
“This event highlights the importance of ergonomics in the students’ careers,” Landavazo said. “Having this fair early in dental school shows both ASDA’s and the School of Dentistry’s commitment to engraining ergonomic practices in students’ training so they can have long-lasting, healthy, productive careers.”
The Loupes Fair continues to be a cornerstone event for the School of Dentistry’s ASDA chapter, reflecting the organization’s mission to support students and prepare them for success in clinical practice.
