Cain named Thomas F. Nowlin Award recipient

Associate Dean for Professional Development and Faculty Affairs Lisa D. Cain, PhD, was recently named the recipient of the Thomas F. Nowlin Award for Outstanding Performance by the ADEA Council of Sections.

The award recognizes an ADEA Section for exceptional demonstrated activities that go above and beyond the requirements throughout the year. Cain was recognized for her efforts within the ADEA Women in Leadership Section as secretary of the section for the 2023-24 school year.

The ADEA Women in Leadership Section’s goal is to leverage insights to develop programs that empower members to evolve into effective leaders in academic dentistry and to help eliminate barriers that impede the rise of women to leadership positions.

“Obtaining this recognition sets the example for others in the School of Dentistry of the importance of service,” Cain said. “It also allows faculty to know that they can make a positive impact in the lives of others on both a local and national level.”

Cain thanks the leadership of Dean John A. Valenza, DDS, for his vision and support that helps many faculty members hold leadership positions within ADEA and has garnered multiple awards.

“To represent the School of Dentistry is an honor because I am representing a school that is committed to excellence in education, patient care, research, and community engagement,” Cain said. “I represent a school that understands the importance of serving others.”

She also thanks members of the Women in Leadership Section and the leadership of ADEA for opportunities to be creative and to make a positive impact.

“The Women in Leadership Section has produced leadership modules, participated in the International Women in Leadership Conference, and is currently producing modules on well-being and wellness,” Cain said.

Cain will serve as the ADEA Women in Leadership Section chair-elect for the 2024-25 school year.
