Chan receives GHDS President’s Award

Associate Professor Michael M. Chan, DDS, of UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry has received the Greater Houston Dental Society President’s Award. The award goes to an individual that has had outstanding work done within the organization.

The award was bestowed at the GHDS Installation and Awards Dinner, where the incoming GHDS leadership team was sworn into their two-year terms. Chan, an outgoing member, says that the award came as an unexpected surprise to him.

“I’ve been thoroughly involved with the Greater Houston Dental Society for some time now,” said Chan. “I enjoy what I do and receiving this award was a nice nod to the time I’ve dedicated.”

Chan is the general practice residency director and has shared his time with the School of Dentistry since 1999. Along with his duties as a faculty member, he also maintains a private practice and is a proud member of multiple professional dental organizations.

Along with his membership within GHDS, he is also a fellow of the American Academy of Hospital Dentists, a diplomate of the American Board of Special Care Dentistry, a member of the American Dental Association, and a master in the Academy of General Dentistry.

GHDS is a non-profit component society of the American Dental Association and the Texas Dental Association. The organization represents over 1,700 dentists in the district and aims to support the area’s dental profession through education, services, and advocacy. 

“We represent the dentists in Houston, and my goal is to make sure students that are graduating stay connected through the organization,” he said. “The majority of the members practice already, but we want the students to continue the trend. It’s important because it gives us all a voice.”
