Second-year dental student Tanvi Gupta has been selected as the 2026 recipient of the Detlef Moore Dental Journalism Scholarship, one of the highest honors recognizing student achievement in dental communications and journalism.

The American Association of Dental Editors and Journalists (AADEJ) announced the scholarship during its annual conference in San Antonio. Established in memory of former AADEJ Executive Director Detlef Moore, the award recognizes a dental student who demonstrates a strong commitment to communication, ethical journalism, leadership, and service to the dental profession.

As the scholarship recipient, Gupta received support to attend AADEJ’s two-day editors conference, including travel, lodging, meals, and conference registration. The experience provided opportunities to learn from leading dental communicators and editors from across the country, expand her professional network, and earn continuing education credits.

Reflecting on her experience at the conference, she expressed gratitude for the writers, editors, and educators who helped her view communication as an essential part of dental practice.

“I expected to learn about writing. I did not expect to rethink what writing is for,” she said. “Beneath the practical topics was one idea that kept coming back: every choice a writer makes is a choice about the reader.”

Gupta says that the exchange of ideas, including carefully building a style guide, the duty of presenting evidence sincerely, and most importantly, the role evidence-based narratives play in shaping public understanding of oral health, inspired her to take her interest in dental journalism more seriously.

“I am grateful to the Detlef Moore Scholarship committee and to everyone at AADEJ who made a second-year student feel like a colleague,” she said.

“I hope to carry what I learned through dental school and to encourage my classmates to find their own voices, because this profession needs people who can explain what they know as well as practice.”

Gupta is enrolled in the dual-degree DDS/MPH program, which prepares future dental professionals to address oral health challenges through both clinical practice and public health approaches. She previously earned degrees in from The University of Texas at Austin, graduating with honors while building an extensive background in student leadership, communications, and journalism. She served as editor-in-chief of The Texas Travesty and held several editorial and communications roles during her undergraduate years.

At UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry, she serves as class secretary for the DDS Class of 2029 and is active in the American Student Dental Association. Nationally, she contributes to ASDA’s student publication, Contour, as a member of its editorial board. Her other activities include research and community outreach initiatives focused on improving oral health access for underserved populations throughout the Houston area.
