Paravina receives CAPES Scholarship to lecture in Brazil

Professor Rade Paravina, DDS, MS, PhD, of UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry was awarded a scholarship from the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (more commonly referred to as CAPES) to lecture abroad in Brazil in May.

CAPES is a foundation within the Ministry of Education in Brazil whose central purpose is to coordinate efforts to improve the quality of Brazil’s faculty and staff in higher education through grant programs, with a focus on training doctoral candidates, pre-doctoral short-term researchers, and post-doctoral scholars.

Paravina presented 15 lectures at three dental schools across a 10-day span in May. He visited:

• Universidade Estadual Paulista "Júlio de Mesquita Filho" (UNESP) School of Dentistry, São José dos Campos, May 13-15
• Universidade de São Paulo (USP) School of Dentistry, São Paulo, May 16
• Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP) School of Dentistry, Piracicaba, May 20-21

Lecture topics varied from color and appearance to dental shade guides to teaching and learning strategies to bringing research to clinical practice to writing for manuscript acceptance.

Paravina, holder of the Ralph C. Cooley, DDS Distinguished Professorship in Biomaterials and director of the John M. Powers, PhD, Houston Center for Biomaterials and Biomimetics at UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry, holds doctorates in dental surgery and philosophy from University of Niš School of Medicine in Niš, Serbia. In 2022, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Semmelweis University.
