UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry joined dental professionals worldwide on Sept. 21 in marking Global Dental and Oral Trauma Day, an initiative launched to raise awareness about the prevention, treatment, and management of dental injuries.
Several students from the Honors in Pediatric Dentistry elective joined Professor Gisela V. Bona, DDS, MS, who wore a shirt featuring the Global Dental and Oral Trauma Day logo, to show their support for the observance, which was established by the International Association of Dental Traumatology in 2024. The initiative highlights the impact of dental and oral trauma, the dental community’s role in managing injuries, and the importance of prevention and education.
Bona has been an IADT member since 2012. She teaches courses on dental trauma at the local, national, and international levels, in addition to instructing dental students.
The annual event commemorates the formation of the IADT and the adoption of the Stockholm Manifesto on Accident Prevention, which affirms that “all human beings have equal right to health and safety.” The manifesto laid the foundation for the IADT’s mission to unite health care providers with an interest in dental traumatology.
