School of Dentistry leaders recognized by Special Care Dentistry Association

Faculty and leadership from UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry were honored by the Special Care Dentistry Association for their longstanding commitment to expanding education and access to care for patients with disabilities.

Dean John Valenza, DDS ’81, received the Special Care Dentistry Association Lifetime Recognition, honoring his many years of leadership in advancing care for vulnerable populations and strengthening educational opportunities for future dental professionals.

“Improving access to care for patients with disabilities has been a long-standing priority for our school,” Valenza said. “I’m proud of the work our faculty and trainees continue to do to advance education, expand care, and carry forward this important mission.”

The recognition reflects the School of Dentistry's decades-long commitment to serving patients with special health care needs, a mission that began nearly 50 years ago.

In 1976, Isaac Konigsberg, DDS, established the School of Dentistry’s Special Patient Program, laying the foundation for a model of care focused on individuals with physical, developmental, and medical complexities. As the program approaches its 50-year milestone, it remains a cornerstone of both clinical service and student training.

Valenza built on Konigsberg’s legacy by expanding access to care through the development of the school’s General Practice Residency program, strengthening clinical training while increasing care capacity for underserved populations.

That work continues through faculty leaders, including Erin Potts, DDS, who directs the Special Patient Clinic, and Michael Chan, DDS, who leads the General Practice Residency and Advanced Education in General Dentistry programs. Both were recognized during SCDA Con in April as current leaders advancing care and education in their respective areas.

Valenza added, “The foundation established nearly 50 years ago continues to shape our work today. We are proud to carry that vision forward by expanding access to care and training providers who are equipped to serve all patients.”
