School of Dentistry wears purple for National Dental Hygiene Month

Throughout October, UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry recognized National Dental Hygiene Month by coming together each Tuesday in a show of purple pride.
Faculty, staff, students, and residents across the School of Dentistry wore purple attire every Tuesday to celebrate the essential work of dental hygienists and raise awareness of the importance of good oral health.
Observed annually in October, National Dental Hygiene Month celebrates dental hygienists and their commitment to helping patients achieve healthier, happier smiles. The month also serves as a reminder of the importance of good oral hygiene in contributing to overall well-being.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, oral diseases — including cavities, gum disease, and oral cancer — affect millions of Americans each year. Practicing good oral hygiene and maintaining regular dental visits can help prevent these conditions and support lifelong oral health.
Dental hygienists play a vital role in patient education, prevention, and care. Their efforts not only protect oral health but also strengthen the connection between oral and systemic health.
By wearing purple each Tuesday, the School of Dentistry community honored the dedication and impact of dental hygienists — both within the school and throughout the profession.
