14th Annual Student Research Showcase set for Oct. 29

The Office of Research at UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry is excited to present the 14th Annual Student Research Showcase on Tuesday, Oct. 29, in the Denton A. Cooley, MD and Ralph C. Cooley, DDS University Life Center.

Jack Ferracane, PhD, founding fellow and past-president of the Academy of Dental Materials and the American Association for Dental Research, will deliver the 2024 William T. Butler Distinguished Lecture.

His lecture, titled “Bioactive Dental Restorative Materials — What Are They and What Role Can They Play in Bonded Dental Restorations?,” will describe the different views of “bioactivity” and provide examples of how this interesting and important concept is being pursued in dentistry.

Ferracane currently serves as professor and chair of restorative dentistry, and division director of biomaterials and biomechanics at Oregon Health and Science University. He received his bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Illinois, and a master’s degree and PhD in biological materials from Northwestern University. He is the recipient of the IADR Distinguished Scientist Wilmer Souder Award, the Academy of Dental Materials Founders Award, and the Hollenback Award from the Academy of Operative Dentistry. Ferracane is an honorary member of the American College of Dentists and the Oregon Dental Association. He is the editor-in-chief of a new journal published by the ADA and Elsevier, entitled JADA Foundational Science.

He has authored or co-authored three textbooks on dental materials, including dental composites, adhesives, amalgams, bioactive materials, and practice-based dental research.

The Student Research Showcase is sponsored by the Office of Research and features projects conducted over the summer by predoctoral and postdoctoral students mentored by UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry faculty.
