Overview
Periodontitis is a biofilm induced chronic inflammatory disease that is characterized by gingival inflammation and alveolar bone loss around teeth. According to the 2009-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), around 61 million adults over 30 years-old have periodontitis (42.2%) with 7.8% having severe periodontitis. Dr. Chun-Teh Lee’s research focuses on understanding resolution of inflammation mediated by specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs) in periodontitis. His work demonstrated that control of inflammation biochemically by SPM has a direct impact on the composition of the subgingival microbiota, gene expression pattern in gingival tissue and reverses periodontal disease progression in the preclinical model. Recently, he is investigating correlations between profiles of SPMs, SPM pathway markers, SPM corresponding receptor gene expression in gingiva and subgingival microbiome in periodontal inflammation and the impact of SPMs on celluar activities. Dr. Lee is also active in studying periodontal disease diagnosis, periodontal disease risk assessment, novel therapy in periodontology and implantology, precision dentistry and evidence-based dentistry.

Improving Periodontal Health through a Precision Periodontal Health Care Chart
The project aims to develop a Precision Periodontal Health Care Chart (PPHCC) consisting of the information on risk factors and risk assessment. The evidence-based information on risk factors will be provided to educate and motivate patients. A risk assessment tool for periodontitis will be developed and a risk profile can be assigned to each patient based on the patient history and clinical examinations.

The Profile of Specialized Proresolving Lipid Mediators and Their Association with Subgingival Microbiota in Periodontitis
This project aims to identify and quantify SPMs and their receptors in gingiva of subjects with periodontitis compared to subjects with healthy periodontium and understand the relationship between profiles of SPMs and subgingival microbiota.

Bioactive Tissue Graft Replacement for Regeneration of Gingiva
This study aims to develop a bioactive tissue graft replacement prototype for the application in the mucogingival plastic surgery. The bioactive tissue graft replacement is a hyaluronic acid-based hydrogel loaded with resolvin E1 potentially can support and augment gingiva and promote periodontal tissue regeneration.
