Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Education

The Katz Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery’s educational mission is to train residents to become exceptional surgeons, compassionate caregivers, and leaders in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Through a rigorous academic and clinical environment, residents develop surgical excellence, ethical practice, and a commitment to patient-centered care.

Education emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, innovative research, and comprehensive training in the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery — including dentoalveolar surgery, maxillofacial trauma, orthognathic surgery, pathology, reconstruction, and anesthesia. The department dedicated to serving diverse communities, addressing healthcare disparities, and fostering professionalism, diversity, and continuous improvement.

By integrating clinical excellence with academic inquiry, the department prepares residents to become future educators, researchers, and leaders who will advance the specialty.

The department offers four post-doctoral educational programs designed to prepare future leaders in clinical practice, research, and education. Each program provides advanced training across the full scope of the specialty, emphasizing surgical excellence, ethical practice, and patient-focused care.

  1. Residency Program
Four-year and six-year advanced education tracks integrate medicine and dentistry, with opportunities to pursue MS or PhD degrees. The program provides extensive training in trauma, reconstruction, oncology, orthognathic surgery, pathology, implants, anesthesia, and aesthetic procedures.
  2. Internship Program
The non-categorical internship offers immersive clinical experience in both outpatient and hospital-based settings. Interns perform dentoalveolar procedures, manage hospital patients, and participate in departmental didactics and educational opportunities across the Texas Medical Center.
  3. Externship Program
Designed for dental students, the externship program provides exposure to the full scope of OMS through rotations at Memorial Hermann Hospital. Participants gain hands-on experience in trauma management, oncology, reconstructive surgery, anesthesia, and routine surgical procedures, while engaging in patient care and departmental conferences.
  4. Fellowship Program
The one- or two-year fellowship in maxillofacial oncology and reconstruction, approved by the Texas Medical Board, trains fellows in comprehensive management of oral, head, and neck oncology, salivary gland tumors, and reconstructive techniques including microvascular surgery. Fellows participate in multidisciplinary care, research, scholarly activity, and resident mentorship.
